Fluoride is a mineral that is already present in most of the foods we eat and water we drink. Simply put, it is the most effective tool available in the prevention of tooth decay. For over fifty years the dental profession has been aware of the great benefits of using fluoride, and its use is supported by health and professional organizations.
TOPICAL fluoride will provide strength to the teeth by seeping into your tooth enamels outer surface. This makes your teeth much more decay resistant. Flouride is generally contained in products such as toothpaste, various over the counter gels and mouth rinses. AZ Valley Dental follows the accepted practice that children receive an application of fluoride twice a year during dental check-ups.
SYSTEMIC fluoride can strength teeth erupting but also the gums. We can intake systemic fluoride through various foods water from our tap. Many dentists can prescribe a supplement or gel form of fluoride as well. When considering fluoride for infants drops are usually recommended. Tablet form is available for children old enough to swallow pills. Be careful when using fluoride. Too much intake can cause a condition called Fluorosis, which are known as “white spots on the teeth.”
While nearly everyone receives fluoride through water and food, it usually is not enough to prevent decay. Dr. Eifler or your dental hygienist may recommend a home-use fluoride treatement. They may suggest this for one or more of the following reasons:
Please note that fluoride by itself will not keep tooth decay away! Dental success requires that you brush twice a day, floss daily, eat healthy meals that are balanced, keep sugary snacks to a minimum, and visit AZ Valley Dental once or twice a year, based on the recommendations of Dr. Eifler.
