Onlay Restoration and Partial Crowns

The Onlay Restoration is also referred to as a “partial crown”. This is a composite material made of gold or tooth-colored porcelain. The partial crown is custom made for the patient and created through a professional dental laboratory. Dr. Eifler will cement the partial crown onto your tooth.

Partial crowns or onlays can repair teeth with defective or large fillings, or teeth that are decayed. Onlay Restoration is an ideal solution compared to a typical crown because more of the natural tooth is saved.

Dr. Eifler will instruct you as to proper dental hygiene to ensure your teeth last as long as possible. Though highly durable and with a long life, your partial crown is not expected to remain a permanent solution and may need replaced eventually.

Why have an Onlay Restoration?

  • Repair broken or cracked teeth
  • Improve cosmetic appearance
  • Help with teeth that are decayed
  • Repair fractured fillings
  • Cover large fillings

What is the Onlay Restoration process?

This is usually a two-appointment process. Dr. Eifler will take multiple impressions of your tooth. This is what will be used to create a temporary restoration.

At your first appointment, Dr. Eifler will remove any existing decay or old filling material. Then the affected area will be cleaned. The doctor will proceed to shape the surface to fit you for an Onlay Restoration.

Between your first and second appointments the professional dental lab will create your permanent partial crown. During your first appointment Dr. Eifler will protect the tooth with a temporary filling because your partial crown will not be ready until your second appointment.

When you return for your final appointment, Dr. Eifler will cement your new partial crown into place.

Remember that proper oral hygiene will help protect all of your teeth. This includes brushing twice per day, flossing, and seeing the dentist for regular visits and cleanings.
