Porcelain Crowns and Caps

A Porcelain Crown is a type of cap that will encase your entire tooth. This cap protects and strengthens your tooth and will give the appearance of a real, natural tooth. When possible, we attempt to keep and restore natural teeth. But when that is not possible, a porcelain crown is an excellent option.

Porcelain Crowns are the most popular type of crown because they most closely resemble your natural teeth. They are known to be very durable and are expected to last many years. However, they are not usually a permanent solution. It may be necessary to replace a porcelain crown at some point in the future. Dr. Eifler will do a great job at matching your crown with the color, size and shape of your teeth.

Reasons for a porcelain crown:

  • You need a root canal
  • Teeth are decayed
  • Old, large fillings
  • Teeth that are broken or fractured
  • Cosmetic reasons

Getting a Porcelain Crown

We expect a crown procedure to require two appointments, approximately two weeks apart. At your initial appointment Dr. Eifler will remove any decay from the affected tooth and shape the surface to help ensure a proper fit with your new and temporary crown. Then molds are taken that will be used to create a custom porcelain crown for your tooth. This will be created by a professional dental lab. We will place a temporary crown on your tooth at your first appointment to protect it until your permanent crown is ready.

At your final appointment, Dr. Eifler will remove your temporary crown and clean your tooth. The new crown will then be secured into place.
